Alex Monti Fox

Actor, Director, Writer, Teacher

BIO:

A theatre lifer, Alex has been on stage and screen (and working behind the scenes) since he was 11 years old. Born and raised in NYC. Trained and educated in Los Angeles and Seattle, he now resides on O’ahu, and can’t wait to get back into rehearsal.

 

Alex has won multiple Hawaii State Theatre Council Po’okela Awards for his acting work in local theatre. His Hawaii stage credits include: True West and The Zoo Story at TAG, The Seagull and

Romeo and Juliet  with Hawaii Shakespeare Festival, and Darling Sonya with OAS. Mainland stage credits include the west coast premiere productions of Eric Bogosian’s Suburbia, Mac Wellman’s Hypatia: The Divine Algebra, Mark Ravenhill’s Faust (Faust Is Dead), Joanna Laurens’s The Three Birds, and Mikhail Bulgakov's Black Snow. Other stage credits include: Back To One (the Lex),  Five Beauties: Tennessee Williams and Julius Caesar  (both with New American Theatre), The Elephant Man (El Centro Theatre), The Illusion (The Actors’ Gang), Soon My Work (International Wow Co.), Mother Courage and Her Children (Jones Playhouse), Another Showcase Showdown (U.S. Comedy Arts Festival, Aspen), and Cue To Cue (Acme Comedy Theatre).

 

An active member of SAG-AFTRA since 2006, Alex's screen-acting credits include the indie films Treading Water, Debaser, A Friend, Keller & Sullivan, Mr. Intimidating , Who Killed Mark Kelly?, Dirty (with Roger Guenveur Smith), and Frank’s Book (with John C. Reilly and Jack Black). He has also acted in several web series, including Suitemates (with Kevin Pollak & Ray Wise), The Pacellis (with Michael Cornacchia), Mr. Robinson’s Driving School (with Craig Robinson), and Dramatic Spam (with Drama 3/4 Productions). Other TV credits include Magnum P.I. (CBS), Hawaii Five-O (CBS), The After Work Special (VH1), I Hate My 30s (VH1), XYZ  (ABC Family),  The Iceman Chronicles (Fox TV Studios), and numerous commercials.

 

As a writer, Alex's first full-length play, Back To One, premiered at The Lex Theatre in Hollywood in 2010. Other recently-produced writing projects include: Sganarelle (NYU Tisch/Playwrights Horizons), Goodnight Clara and Tartuffe (MPSA), Never Gladly Beyond (Official Selection, 2014 Branchage Film Festival, UK), Cathexis (UW), Noir Crossed Lovers (The Lillian Theatre, LA), and numerous adaptations of classics for Stone Soup Theatre in Seattle.

 

Additionally, Alex co-created, co-produced, co-wrote, and co-directed a series of musical comedy variety shows called Another Showcase Showdown, which ran for a decade in Los Angeles, and were an official selection of the 2002 U.S. Comedy Arts Festival in Aspen, Colorado.

 

As a director, Alex has helmed dozens of projects. Highlights include: Measure For Measure (Hawaii Shakes),  Darling Sonya (O'ahu Fringe), The Illusion, Black Snow, Tartuffe, The House of Bernarda Alba, Goodnight Clara, and Julius Caesar (MPSA), Simple City (Evidence Room), Hustlers, Hunters & Men of God (Namaste Theatre Co.), and Peter Pan (Tacoma Actors Guild). With both EC Los Angeles and Kings College Hollywood, Alex created and developed Acting for International Students programs, with whom he directed numerous devised-theatre productions. Highlights include: Ritual (with Kings College), and Contemporary Shorts (with ECLA).

 

Behind the scenes, Alex has worked professionally as a stage manager, sound designer, scenic carpenter, board operator, prop master, assistant technical director, lighting design assistant, photographer, graphic designer, production assistant, and house manager. Some notable companies with whom he has worked include: the Delacorte Theatre (NYSF), the Mark Taper Forum, South Coast Rep, the Actors’ Gang, the USC School of Dramatic Arts, Symphony Space, MTV, Metro Scenery, Drama ¾ Productions, the Namaste Theatre Co., the Lillian Theatre, the Lex Theatre, the Long Beach Opera Association, Tacoma Actors Guild,  and the University of Washington School of Drama.

 

As a teacher, Alex has taught acting, directing, devising, speech, Shakespeare, and theatre history courses and workshops at Hollywood High School Performing Arts Magnet, MPSA, The Namaste Theatre Company, The Evidence Room, Cal State LA, the University of Washington, the University of Southern California, UH Mānoa CRDG, University Lab School (UH Mānoa), Mānoa Valley Theatre, Honolulu DPR, and O’ahu Acting Studio.

 

Alex has an MFA in Acting from the University of Washington PATP, and a BA in Theatre with minor in Cinematic Arts from USC. He has completed the teaching credential program of the Cal State LA Charter College of Education, and has a CELTA (Grade A) from the University of Cambridge Teaching House Los Angeles. Alex has also been an Examiner for International Baccalaureate, and has taught both IB Theatre (HL) and IB Theory of Knowledge courses.

 

Additionally, Alex has coached multiple Hawaii State Champions in the National Endowment for the Arts Poetry Out Loud competition, as well as the English-Speaking Union’s National Shakespeare Competition, and the Hawaii Speech League. Many of Alex’s students have gone on to train at some of the nation’s elite conservatory programs, including Chapman, NYU/Tisch, USC, UCLA, Vassar, Berklee College of Music, Emerson, UBC, Carnegie Mellon, UH Mānoa, UCSD, Princeton, Pace, UW, The New School, Marymount Manhattan, and Fordham.

 

Alex is a teacher, because he is a student. He would like to acknowledge and express sincere gratitude to the many mentors who have shaped his approach to work and life.
